Next Course: Tuesday 1st July - Tuesday 29th July 2025 | 6pm - 9pm

Join us for a structured 5 Week Throwing Course designed to build your confidence and skills on the potter’s wheel. Whether you're completely new to throwing or looking to refine your technique, this course covers all the essential skills. From throwing basic forms to trimming, attaching handles, and glazing. Sessions are 3 hours long. Each week focuses on a different aspect of the making process, and by the end, you'll have created and glazed a small collection of your own thrown pots, ready be taken home!

What’s included?

  • All clay, tools, glazes, and firing costs.

  • Expert tuition in a relaxed, friendly environment.

  • Use of your own dedicated wheel during each session.

  • The opportunity to create multiple pieces throughout the course.

  • All glaze is food safe, meaning you can use it for dinnerware at home!

Week-by-Week Breakdown

Week 1: Centring & Cylinders

  • Introduction to the wheel and studio set-up

  • Wedging and preparing clay for throwing

  • Learning to centre clay on the wheel

  • Throwing cylinders – the foundation of most wheel-thrown forms

  • Understanding height, wall thickness, and consistency

Week 2: Bowls & Plates

  • Refining your centring and pulling techniques

  • Throwing open forms such as bowls and shallow dishes

  • Exploring shape and rim finishes for functional ware

  • Trimming basics: when to remove from the wheel and why

Week 3: Trimming & Attaching Handles

  • Trimming leather-hard pots using turning tools

  • Creating foot rings and refining your forms

  • Pulling and attaching handles for mugs or jugs

  • Techniques for scoring, slipping, and securing joins

  • Discussion on drying stages and handling forms with care

Week 4: Creative Throwing

  • Throwing more complex or playful forms such as candle holders, joined pieces or altered shapes

  • Introduction to throwing on batts for larger or flatter pieces

  • Space to experiment and apply personal ideas

  • Troubleshooting common issues as you expand your skills

Week 5: Glazing & Surface Decoration

  • Introduction to glazing materials and kiln safety

  • Waxing, dipping, pouring and layering glaze techniques

  • Using and understanding underglazes.

  • Understanding glaze behaviour and choosing finishes

  • Preparing your work for glaze firing.
